Hsiao Chin is most renowned for using vivid and vibrant colors in creating highly-dimensional and abstract compositions. His style was ever-changing in the late 1950’s up to the early 1960’s, during which his body of works demonstrated motifs and calligraphic manner from his roots, translated as closed forms, composed on a flat pictorial space. As he continued to seek the meaning of existence, he gave context to each geometric shapes that are sometimes symmetrical and asymmetrical- which later became his most recognizable mannerism in the works of early 60s.
During this period, Hsiao Chin received mentorship and support from contemporary art publishing giant Mazzotta Foundation and Milan G Marconni- one of the most prestigious gallery, for nearly a decade. Hsiao was a prominent artist during his time in Italy, establishing himself amongst the highest caliber of his contemporaries. His achievements was acknowledged throughout Europe and later internationally. While other Chinese artists were also contributing to the arts overseas; Zao Wou-Ki, as a leading representative for Lyrical Abstraction in France; Richard Lin was the last generation of artists to practice Minimalism in England, and Walasse Ting developed a series of works in the manner of Abstract Expressionism in America.Hsiao Chin, on the other hand, was founding various art movements in Europe, including “PUNTO,” which heavily influenced the art field from 1960’s to 70’s. He is undeniably a pioneer of contemporary abstraction in both Europe and Asia.
According to Taoist philosophy, the world’s beginning can be defined by Tai-Chi, the equilibrium of Ying and Yang, also associated with the balance of Heavens and Earth. The Earth remained modest and unmoved, parallel to a rectangle that is fixed and unmoved. As opposed to the sun and moon, which move forward endlessly in alternating cycles of nature, comparable to a round sphere. A Taoist concept of “Spherical heavens and flat earth.” Between the two energy of Ying and Yang, the universe finds balance in all things, and thus can sustain eternal life.
In the painting “Forma Tondo Nel Quadratto,” a vibrating spirituality and expansion of energy is conveyed, signifying the robust vitality of the sun- as it is rendered by infinite waves of magnetic field; exhibiting an unknown, mysterious, oscillating yet serene, and infinite fantasy of the universe. The painting was executed with a limited yet intense color palette generously applied in broad expanses to the canvas. The artist deliberately added white, powder-liked spots throughout, to create a “sparkling” effect that mimic the illusion of light, in providing flowing space and energy within the closed dimension. He captured the cosmos in his minimalistic work, limiting the range of colors and utilizing regular forms. Visually mediating the contours and circular forms, rendering the sublime with nominal device. Drawing on spiritual symbols shared by Eastern and Western civilization, his works visualize ideologies and seek to refine representations of beauty with pure simplicity. This painting belongs to his “Solar” series that ended in 1966.
