Both peaches and monkeys are auspicious symbols in Buddhist teachings representing longevity. This teaching is also replicated in the Chinese legend which was recorded in the novel Journey to the West where the monkey king Sun Wukong stole and ate all the peach of immortality from the Jade Emperor’s orchard before Xiwangmu, the Queen Mother of the West, and her lady servants could harvest them for the peach banquet.
The image of monkey and peaches traces back to Song dynasty paintings, notably the painting by Liu Songnian, The Scroll of Arhats, preseved in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, of two monkeys presenting peaches to a luohan.
